How Can I Relax in Tournament Play?

Tennis Player:

Hi, I play tennis and I really have a lot of trouble during tournament play. I cannot help but get really nervous during a match, and I play really tentatively and can\'t seem to play my game. I play really well when practicing or hitting with friends, I just can\'t seem to get it together when I’m playing in a real match. Do you know what I can do?

Dr. Cohn’s Answer:

The problem is that you are putting too much pressure on yourself and worrying too much about results and your performance. You are nervous because you are afraid to fail or embarrass yourself. You have to stop trying so hard to win and play well—trying too hard is the result of the expectations you have about your game. Focus on one point at a time and forget about the final outcome. Have confidence and trust in your practice and that your practice will carry your as long as you play with freedom.
