COHN: “Do you have a young athlete who tends to give up and stop playing when they are losing? Today, I answer a question from Tracy. Tracy has a 10 year old that tends to get frustrated and angry and gives up. This is what Tracy had to say: ‘My son, who is 10 years old, plays soccer at a high level for his age. When he plays any game, doesn’t matter if it’s monopoly or an important league game, if he is losing, he will give up. He will stop playing and usually be angry. Any tips to help us through this?'”

COHN: “Tracy, this is the most common question that we get from sports parents, from kids who tend to lose composure, lose control of themselves, get angry, and then you see this give up process. We actually have a word for it in tennis, it’s called tanking. Tanking is when you’re losing and you tend to just give up because you’re so frustrated. And that’s the important thing I want you to understand. He may not be giving up and stop trying. He may be just really frustrated and upset and doesn’t know what to do in that point of time…”
