Handling Adversity In Sports With Olaniyi Sobomehin

Improve Your Performance In Sports

In this week’s sports psychology podcast, mental game of sports expert, Dr. Patrick Cohn interviews Olaniyi Sobomehin. Olaniyi is a former NFL running back for the New Orleans Saints. He played football at Oregon State, and Portland State. He played with some of the best players in the country, and many of them are still playing and excelling in the NFL. His motto is “Success is 20% Mechanics… and 80% Mindset…

Dr. Cohn and Olaniyi discuss adversity and what to do about adversity in sports.

SOBOMEHIN: “This idea of obstacles, hurdles, or adversity wasn’t new to me as a young player. What sustained me at that time was knowing what I wanted. And what I wanted was to play football. So whatever your desire is, whatever your why is, whatever is that thing that’s driving you, young athletes need to figure out what it is that’s driving them and hold on to it. That’s what is going to sustain you when things get tough…”

“Another thing I would focus on when going through hard times, I’d focus on the value I can add to the team. Instead of focusing on who is doing what for me and what is in it for me, think of ways you can add to the team. At the end of the day, that’s why you play sports, that’s why you’re on a team. We are there to add value.”
