The point is that most athletes ignore the positive and highlight the negative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you don\u2019t see the whole picture or evaluate your <strong>performance<\/strong> objectively, your confidence will be adversely affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at how harsh self-evaluations affect confidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps you had a coach or your parents nag you after a competition and point out your mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;You may have achieved a personal best, beat a rival, or made the semi-final, but you were told, \u201cIf you did this better, you would have achieved that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfair assessments of your <strong>performance<\/strong> hurt your confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, many athletes do the same thing to themselves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A negative assessment is short-sighted. Partial assessments rarely provide feedback on how to improve your game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How to effectively assess <strong>performance<\/strong> after a competition<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Heres_an_effective_assessment_model_After_each_competition_ask_yourself_the_following_four_questions\"><\/span>Here\u2019s an effective assessment model. After each competition, ask yourself the following four questions:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong>What did I do well?<\/strong> When you identify positive aspects of your <strong>performance<\/strong>, you reinforce those actions in future competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>What needs improvement?<\/strong> When you recognize areas that need to be improved, you gain a clear sense of focus for future training or practice sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>What is my plan for improvement?<\/strong> An action plan provides directions for how you intend to work on these areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. <strong>What are the three biggest successes of my performance?<\/strong> When you highlight your accomplishments, you keep your confidence high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Objective evaluation of competitive <strong>performances<\/strong> helps you maintain confidence and sustain motivation to improve your game.<br>How do elite athletes evaluate <strong>performance<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elite athletes achieve elite status because they see the good and not-so-good in their <strong>performances<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Leanne Wong won the all-around competition and the balance beam and vault titles at the 2022 U.S. Classic. Wong was a 2020 U.S. Olympic alternate and reigning world all-around silver medalist and is gearing up for another Olympic run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Wong won, she still has room for improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She fell on uneven bars while attempting a new skill and committed a line violation on her second vault attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chelsie Memmel, technical lead for Team USA\u2019s women\u2019s program, and Wong viewed the whole picture when evaluating her <strong>performance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MEMMEL<\/strong>: &#8220;<em>Saw a lot of things that need improvement, beam being one of them. Beam is a little rough, has been a little rough. We definitely have work to do, but I\u2019ve seen a lot of good things and think we are in a good place moving forward.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, Wong and Memmel identified successes and areas of improvement and saw Wong moving in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Objectively evaluating your <strong>performance<\/strong> is a mental skill that produces better <strong>performances<\/strong> and improved confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tip_for_Evaluating_Performances_Objectively\"><\/span>Tip for Evaluating Performances Objectively:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a <strong>performance<\/strong> evaluation notebook.
