Plateauing causes athletes to feel frustrated, less confident, and stuck in performance ruts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Athletes_shy_away_from_taking_risks_for_several_reasons\"><\/span>Athletes shy away from taking risks for several reasons:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fear of failure&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 \u201cIf I mess up, it means I\u2019m a failure.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Perfectionism<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 \u201cIf I can\u2019t perform it perfectly, then I don\u2019t want to attempt it at all.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Need for contro<\/strong>l \u2013 \u201cI\u2019m not sure what will happen or if I will fail if I try something new.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fear of success<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 \u201cIf I succeed, others will expect more of me.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of confidence<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 \u201cI\u2019m not good enough to achieve anything significant in my sport.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a swimmer may risk going all in to make a national cut in the 100 freestyle. The reward would be achieving a personal best and their first-ever senior national cut.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not reaching the cutoff time could lead a swimmer to believe they are not good enough or are a failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holding back will leave you feeling regretful and disappointed&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_should_you_take_calculated_risks\"><\/span>Why should you take calculated risks?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Helps you understand what it takes to get to the next level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Helps you approach future risks with confidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provides you with positive feedback to succeed in the future<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breaks you out of your comfort zone<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leads to growth, improvement, and achievement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, American figure skater Ilia Malinin, 17, landed the second-ever quadruple axel in competition at the 2022 Skate America. The difficult jump helped Malinin earn his first gold medal and become the youngest men\u2019s champion in the event\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the best skaters in the world haven\u2019t even attempted the jump in competition. Yet, Malinin took the risk, and the reward was well worth the effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MALININ<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>\u201cThis morning, I wasn\u2019t really sure if I would attempt it or not, but I think that it came over my mind that everyone\u2019s watching, I have to go for this, and I went for it, and I landed it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When taking <strong>risks<\/strong>, you might feel your self-image is threatened if you fail. However, when you take calculated risks and work towards your goals, you will more often than not succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reward for challenging yourself is breaking new barriers and accomplishing meaningful goals, which can give you a sense of pride and confidence. The rewards are clearly well worth going for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before practicing or competing, ask yourself, \u201cWould I rather play it safe and achieve average results or continue to push and increase my chances of success?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Define the behaviors for you that would help you take more <strong>risks <\/strong>when you compete. Set these as objectives when you compete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing it safe is the enemy of reaching your potential. Achieving true success requires taking calculated <strong>risks<\/strong>.
