Too many athletes cripple their confidence with <strong>self-critical thinking <\/strong>after they perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When doing \u201c<strong>confidence coaching<\/strong>\u201d with athletes, I make sure we discuss how to view their performance positively so they can grow confidence\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you overly self-critical after your perform or a lose? Often, this comes from holding yourself to <strong>high expectations<\/strong>: wanting to perform as well as you can each time you compete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, you adopt the self-critical voice inside your head from coaches, parents, or friends who treated you this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Perfectionists_for_example_tend_to_be_very_self-critical_and_focus_too_much_on_the_negatives\"><\/span>Perfectionists, for example, tend to be very self-critical and focus too much on the negatives.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If not dealt with, you can reach a state of learned helplessness. You feel so helpless that you \u201cdon&#8217;t care anymore&#8221; and can lose motivation or desire to train or practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can you do? Here\u2019s a tip from my new e-book for <strong>Peaksports Network members<\/strong>, Titled, \u201cHow to Assess Your Performance for Greater Confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put yourself in the shoes of others. What are <strong>two positive<\/strong> things a coach might tell you about your game?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you do anything else, think about what you did well in the game or performance. Keep in mind that not everything will go your way&#8211;even when you are on fire and playing in the zone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Above all, I never want my athletes to judge themselves as persons based on how well they performed. Always remember that you are more than a win\/lose record or a score.
