By belief, I\u2019m not just talking about pie-in-the-sky belief, but belief steeped in reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step in understanding belief is to know the effect of a lack of belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Athletes who lack belief constantly experience doubts such as \u201cHow can we beat them? That team is undefeated!\u201d or \u201cHow is victory even possible when that athlete is ranked No. 1?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a team or athlete doesn\u2019t believe they have a chance for victory, their preparation, confidence, effort, and focus will fall significantly below 100 percent. After all, why would an athlete be fully committed if they believe a loss is a certainty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_can_an_athlete_build_belief\"><\/span>How can an athlete build belief?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To build belief, you need a mixture of work, effort, preparation, confidence, positive self-talk, and <strong>mental<\/strong> toughness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Work<\/strong> \u2013 Developing your <strong>mental<\/strong> and technical skills to their fullest helps build trust in your ability to compete.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Effort<\/strong>\u2014When you put maximum effort into training sessions, you know you can produce the same level of effort in competitions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Preparation<\/strong> \u2013 Out-preparing your opponent, <strong>mentally<\/strong> and physically, gives you a significant edge heading into the competition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confidence<\/strong> \u2013 To beat the best, you must have the confidence you can compete on their level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Self-Talk<\/strong> \u2013 Belief requires sending yourself positive messages that enhance performance, competitiveness, and production.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mental<\/strong> <strong>Toughness<\/strong> \u2013 You need to build your <strong>mental<\/strong> toughness to the point that you know you can overcome any adversity that comes your way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Building belief is the first step in athletic success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 2024 March Madness NCAA tournament, No. 14 Oakland University upset No. 3 seed Kentucky, 80-76, in the first round. However, Oakland didn\u2019t see the win as an upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oakland head coach Greg Kampe stressed the team believed in themselves, no matter who they faced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>KAMPE<\/strong>: \u201cWe wanted Kentucky because they\u2019re the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kampe fueled his team\u2019s beliefs throughout the game with consistent positive messages, such as \u201cWe win close games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oakland guard Jack Gohlke, who made ten three-pointers, reaffirmed the level of belief when he exclaimed after the game, \u201cWe\u2019re not a Cinderella.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if other people believe you are the \u201cCinderella,\u201d it doesn\u2019t mean you have to buy into their opinion. Nobody but you knows what you do behind the scenes to prepare. Nobody sees the work you put in to compete against the very best\u2026 and nobody\u2019s belief matters except for yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crafting a winning <strong>mental<\/strong> game starts with building a positive belief system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every day, during training sessions, you have the opportunity to build belief in your game.
