In fact, you would be hard pressed to find athletes not make some type of reference about <strong>pressure<\/strong> they felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you become more competitive, <strong>pressure<\/strong> seems to increase and, for many athletes, that can be an overwhelming aspect of the athletic experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Athletes respond to <strong>pressure<\/strong> in different ways. That is, <strong>pressure<\/strong> has different sources, is perceived differently, and affects athletes in different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pressure_often_comes_in_the_form_of_expectations_you_might_feel\"><\/span>Pressure often comes in the form of expectations you might feel:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I have to be perfect and make no mistakes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have to perform well for my teammates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I can&#8217;t let down coach or I&#8217;ll get benched.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pressure<\/strong> is self-induced most of the time. You think others have high demands for your game&#8211;often the same demands or standards you have for your game.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I have to admit, sometimes parents and coaches can have demands for athletes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhat do you have to go to when the garbage hits the fan, because it will hit the fan. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.\u201d<\/em> <strong>~Ken Ravizza, Ph.D.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some athletes feel the need to carry their teams on their back or outperform previous performances or always have a PR in the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of this <strong>pressure<\/strong> comes from the perception of excessively high expectations, which lead to the feeling or <strong>pressure<\/strong>. Some athlete thrive, while others might choke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But guess what? When you feel the weight of expectations and the pressure to <strong>perform<\/strong>, you might try to do too much. This leads to trying to be perfect and avoid mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the opposite can happen&#8230; Athletes under <strong>pressure<\/strong> might feel the need to play it safe and perform tentatively.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, the <strong>pressure<\/strong> to perform can be heightened for athletes in the playoffs&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>Pressure<\/strong> is self-inflicted because you\u2019re focused too much on results. You want to ask yourself, \u2018what do I have to do each day so you can win a championship\u2019?\u201d<\/em> <strong>~Nick Saban<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But make no mistake about it, you can&#8217;t heap expectations upon yourself and perform freely.
