What is the zone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The zone is simply a mental state of total focus in the present moment. We call this being \u201cimmersed\u201d as it indicates you don\u2019t worry about outcomes or are not distracted when you perform. You trust your skills and react without worry, doubt, or fear about results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The important question is: How do athletes get into the zone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of our readers, Sydney, asked: \u201cI\u2019ve had some problems &#8220;getting into my zone&#8221; when I go from large, high pressure, competition to smaller events. How do I maintain my ability to get into my zone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem here is that you can\u2019t force yourself in the &#8216;zone&#8217; every time you compete. It\u2019s an ideal state, but does not happen often for athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Sydney, she likes the excitement of bigger competitions and struggles to get up for smaller events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you are a regular reader of our mental game tips, we\u2019ve helped you understand several roadblocks that prevent you or your athletes from getting into the zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_do_want_to_understand_what_blocks_you_from_getting_into_the_zone_such_as\"><\/span>You do want to understand what blocks you from getting into the zone, such as:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fear of failure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perfectionism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High expectations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-doubt or low confidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of focus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trying too hard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intimidation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Worry about what others think<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of intensity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and the list goes on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The zone is not a zen-like or magical state. The zone is a state of being fully absorbed into the present &#8211; the here and now only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t force yourself into the zone, what can you do? You can have the right mindset, or set the foundation, to help you find the zone\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mindsets_to_Help_Athletes_Enter_The_Zone\"><\/span>Mindsets to Help Athletes Enter The Zone<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be here, now. Pick out and focus on the right performance cues to help help you stay in moment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stop worrying about the outcome of the competition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let go of what others might think about your performance; stop trying to read others\u2019 minds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Park distractions, from your life, that you might take into competition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform functionally; the opposite of trying to be perfect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make it a goal to have fun, instead of being too serious<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Narrow your focus on one simple objective when you perform<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep it simple and avoid over thinking or analyzing that\u2019s happening<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stop judging how well you are doing on every play; get to the next play<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Pick just one idea that will help you perform in the moment.
