Add an unruly crowd to the mix and the competition can seem insurmountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing away from home has its challenges: playing in an unfamiliar environment, coping with traveling, and noisy crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Being_out_of_your_comfort_zone_can_produce_anxiety_and_interfere_with_performing_optimally\"><\/span>Being out of your comfort zone can produce anxiety and interfere with performing optimally.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Former NFL offensive lineman Grey Ruegamer highlighted the reason hostile environments can affect performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RUEGAMER<\/strong>:<em> \u201cIf you allow the \u2018hostile environment\u2019 tagline to creep into your psyche, you are wasting time and energy on something other than football and that can affect performance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s the key to <strong>performing<\/strong> <strong>optimally<\/strong> in hostile crowds?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, you need to understand that playing away from home may be uncomfortable but that doesn\u2019t need to interfere with your <strong>focus<\/strong> or <strong>confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what sport, the sport itself, rules, equipment and the apparatus remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So playing optimally in hostile environments requires a conscious choice to <strong>focus<\/strong> on your game and not all the external distractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio State traveled to Penn State for a 2014 mid-season football match-up at boisterous Beaver Stadium. Despite Penn State\u2019s home field advantage, Ohio State looked forward to the challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio State Sophomore defensive lineman Joey Bosa exemplified the Buckeyes\u2019 positive mindset about playing in a hostile environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BOSA<\/strong>: <em>\u201cI\u2019ve been waiting to play in this stadium, because apparently it just erupts and is crazy. So I\u2019m super excited.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ohio State chose not to be intimidated and instead <strong>focused<\/strong> on their game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BOSA<\/strong>: <em>\u201cBasically just don\u2019t let the crowd get to you&#8230; you just keep playing. Keep playing and as the game rolls along and it starts to go our way, then you\u2019ll see it just like any other game.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Try_these_tips_to_play_optimally_in_hostile_environments\"><\/span>Try these tips to play optimally in hostile environments:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tip #1: Know that playing in a hostile environment will be different from home but you have a job to do. It&#8217;s a matter of choice as to whether you allow these distractions to affect your game.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tip #2: Your competitive mindset needs to be the same whether you are on the road or at home. Performing well requires detailed preparation, hard work and focus on your game.
