challenges, to achieve more of their potential and to get to the \u201cnext level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question most athletes seek to answer is, <em>\u201cHow do I get to the next level?\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cWhat specifically do elite athletes do that separates them from the pack?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Championship athletes engage in <strong>mental<\/strong> <strong>toughness<\/strong> training as part of their training package&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental toughness is about overcoming distractions (fear of failing, worry about future results, opponents, bad calls by officials, past mistakes) and <strong>focusing<\/strong> on what you can do now to <strong>positively<\/strong> affect the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The secret to <strong>success<\/strong> is that top teams and top athletes consistently train their mental game along with physical training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Take_for_example_the_defending_Super_Bowl_champions_the_Seattle_Seahawks\"><\/span>Take for example the defending Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Seattle was on the brink of losing the 2014 NFC championship game down 16-0 at the half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then with time dwindling, the Seahawks complete the largest comeback in championship game history defeating the Packers on the last play of overtime to win their second-straight NFC Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many labeled the comeback as \u201cmiraculous\u201d but, in reality, the comeback had everything to do with the team\u2019s <strong>mental<\/strong> <strong>toughness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pete Carroll, head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, is widely considered by many colleagues as an innovator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the keys to Carroll\u2019s <strong>success<\/strong> is his attention to the mental side of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Carroll arrived in Seattle, he hired a Sport Psychologist to assist with the mental conditioning of his players and the team\u2019s overall mental toughness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the Seahawks\u2019 mental and physical training, the team is gearing up to defend their title in Super Bowl XLIX.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emphasis Carroll places on training <strong>mental<\/strong> <strong>toughness<\/strong> provides insight to the mindset of champions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Carroll believes that preparation and work forge an athlete\u2019s <strong>confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CARROLL<\/strong>: <em>\u201cPractice is everything. It\u2019s where we make us.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Carroll believes that practice should mimic competition in order to develop the mental skill of <strong>focusing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CARROLL<\/strong>: <em>\u201cI\u2019m trying to create a really thriving environment [in practice]. That means making it as rich as possible. So there\u2019s noise, competition, activity, energy\u2014like when we play. It\u2019s better than a pristine vacuum-type environment, as far as I\u2019m concerned, because we never play there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Carroll understands that the only way to achieve success is to <strong>focus<\/strong> on the \u201cnow\u201d and what YOU need to do in the present moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CARROLL<\/strong>: <em>\u201cWe focus on what\u2019s right in front of us. We don\u2019t care about the other team or the environment we\u2019re playing in. We just take every game as if it\u2019s the most important in the world and focus right on that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CARROLL<\/strong>: <em>\u201cIt\u2019s really all about us. We\u2019re competing against ourselves to be our best. It\u2019s no disrespect for our opponents. But I don\u2019t want to place any value on our opponents from one week to the next. I want everything to be directed at us being at our best no matter who we\u2019re playing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_develop_the_mental_toughness_of_a_Super_Bowl_Champion\"><\/span>How to develop the mental toughness of a Super Bowl Champion:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tip #1: Practice in a way that mimics competition. Train and practice like it was the critical moment of your most important competition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tip #2: Strive to tune out all the mental noise\/distractions that take away from what you need to focus on now. Remember, you have the choice to where you place your focus.
