The ability to cope with distractions when performing is a hallmark of elite athletes&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the ability to focus 100% is not always easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jeers, taunts and boos from spectators can become so loud that it may seem impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever seen ball players shooting a free throw with the opposing fans screaming, jumping and waving objects to distract them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_you_focus_on_your_distractions_you\"><\/span>When you focus on your distractions, you:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bring the distraction into your mind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Experience negative emotions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lose focus on what&#8217;s important<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a reason spectators try to distract athletes&#8230; because often they can get in an athlete\u2019s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of an annoying salesperson trying to get you to buy something you absolutely don\u2019t need&#8230; You can\u2019t totally avoid the person&#8230; The salesperson is trying to get your attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to not engage the salesperson. When they ask, \u201cCan I have a minute of time,\u201d your response should be a short, \u201cNot right now!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"If_you_give_outside_distractions_permission_they_dominate_your_focus_of_attention\"><\/span>If you give outside distractions permission, they dominate your focus of attention.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The same is true for sports&#8230; You will definitely be aware of the tone of the crowd but you don\u2019t have to invite them into your mental space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should never give outside distractions more than a \u201cNot right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan was heckled all game long by Dallas Maverick fans in his first game in Dallas since rescinding his word to sign a free agent contract with the Mavericks this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maverick fans held up signs that read &#8220;42% FT shooter &#8211; 100% coward&#8221; and loudly booed Jordan every time he touched the ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Jordan_expected_the_negative_response_by_the_hostile_crowd\"><\/span>Jordan expected the negative response by the hostile crowd.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;They&#8217;re obviously going to boo and heckle a little bit but I thought it was going to be a lot worse, said Jordan.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan focused on his job and the team\u2019s game plan instead of trying to show up the fans. <em>&#8220;Ultimately, we came out here to win a basketball game and that was it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the Mavericks won 118-108, Jordan finished the game with nine points and 11 rebounds; both close to his season averages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan was aware of the tone of the crowd but didn\u2019t feed into the negativity or allow it to <strong>distract<\/strong> him from his job on the court:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;My job is to be a defender and a rebounder, a stopper for our team. I felt like I did what I was supposed to.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental Game Tips for Overcoming a Hostile Crowd<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Focusing<\/strong> on your game plan is the most important task.
