Your own mental gremlins want to punish you for not performing well&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;I should never make bogey on that easy hole.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;I need to find another sport to play after missing yet another three-footer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;I&#8217;ll probably dump this ball in the water because I&#8217;m hitting the ball so poorly today.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PGA Tour player Tim Simpson was asked: &#8220;What&#8217;s the hardest thing to do in sports?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said to play <strong>relaxed<\/strong> and keep the <strong>mind quiet<\/strong> is the hardest thing to do in sports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&nbsp;&#8220;To play totally relaxed. I&#8217;ve talked to Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Mike Schmidt about it. Any athlete performs at his best when the mind is the quietest. That&#8217;s all sports psychology is &#8212; trying to quiet the mind to let your body play instinctively.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>~Tim Simpson<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I agree with Tim &#8211; at least for some players. A <strong>quiet mind<\/strong> is essential for peak performance especially for golfers who <strong>over analyze<\/strong> and <strong>over control<\/strong> their performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"However_I_can_think_of_many_layers_of_a_quiet_mind%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>However, I can think of many layers of a quiet mind&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>One layer of a quiet mind is coping with poor shots or poor play. I recently published a CD program called <strong>*The Relaxed Athlete*<\/strong> to help players perform with a <strong>calm mind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think the hardest thing to do in golf is remain <strong>confident<\/strong>, <strong>composed<\/strong>, and not let your inner gremlins win when you under perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fragile confidence<\/strong> can block any talented golfer from realizing his talent. If you have <strong>fragile confidence<\/strong>, you ride the <strong>confidence<\/strong> roller-coaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong>fragile confidence<\/strong>, <strong>confidence<\/strong> decreases after one bad shot! When <strong>confidence<\/strong> wanes after poor shots, you can&#8217;t play with a <strong>quiet mind<\/strong>&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Doubt<\/strong> can overtake your thoughts. When working with my students, I make sure we address how to overcome <strong>doubt<\/strong>. This is a must if you want to ride a steady wave of <strong>confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be unaware when <strong>doubt <\/strong>strikes. Your <strong>doubt<\/strong> may be just a tough habit to break. Or your <strong>doubt<\/strong> might even be a form of <strong>self-punishment after mistakes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In any case, you must cap <strong>doubt<\/strong> quickly before it erodes <strong>confidence<\/strong>.
