But do you work on this <strong>mental<\/strong> <strong>game<\/strong> skill?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Athletes_with_a_high_level_of_confidence%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>Athletes with a high level of confidence&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Can better handle pressure during critical moments of competition.<br>&#8211;Perform with <strong>consistency<\/strong> for longer periods of time.<br>&#8211;Are more <strong>motivated<\/strong> to achieve goals.<br>&#8211;Don&#8217;t play with fear or anxiety.<br>&#8211;Rise up to meet the rigors of training.<br>&#8211;Learn from mistakes rather than allowing mistakes to kill <strong>confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t believe in your ability to perform well in competition, chances are you won\u2019t go all out or even take the necessary risks to play your best in games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, a lack of <strong>confidence<\/strong> sabotages performance because it undermines your ability to perform freely&#8211;in the flow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, athletes rarely spend time working on the <strong>mental<\/strong> <strong>game<\/strong> <strong>skill<\/strong> of <strong>confidence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those athletes that lack <strong>confidence<\/strong> or have more doubt believe it&#8217;s some kind of permanent affliction that they need to live with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>confidence<\/strong> can be improved. Like a plant, <strong>confidence<\/strong> requires daily attention and needs to be fed properly in order to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Heres_a_recent_example_we_see_from_a_collegiate_athlete%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>Here&#8217;s a recent example we see from a collegiate athlete&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UCLA tight end and fifth-year senior Nate Iese\u2019s play on the field has benefited from increased <strong>confidence<\/strong> during his final collegiate year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iese bounced around playing various positions on both sides of the ball before finding <strong>success<\/strong> as a tight end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight games into the 2016 season and Iese is third on the team with 23 receptions for 371 yards with a team-leading four touchdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iese had a breakout game in a losing effort against Utah with eight catches for 146 yards and two touchdowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IESE<\/strong>: <em>&#8220;I\u2019m feeling very <strong>confident<\/strong>. Like I said, I gain <strong>confidence<\/strong> week to week. The more reps I take, the more <strong>confidence<\/strong> I gain. Hopefully I\u2019ll be able to put another game like that out there, but also get a win.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_has_Iese_improved_his_confidence\"><\/span>How has Iese improved his confidence?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By <strong>focusing<\/strong> on developing his <strong>confidence<\/strong> with meaningful reps and challenging himself on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IESE<\/strong>: <em>\u201cI\u2019m very satisfied with what\u2019s happening now. I\u2019m not content at all. I want to keep progressing every week. The more reps the better for me. I feel like I\u2019m getting better with repetition, but I just want to contribute to the offense and get a win this week, so that\u2019s my main focus right now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to improve your performance, work on improving your <strong>confidence<\/strong> the first priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Strategies_to_Improve_your_Confidence\"><\/span>4 Strategies to Improve your Confidence:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Note your strengths and don&#8217;t be afraid to improve your weaknesses \u2013 When you talk and think about the things you do well, your <strong>confidence<\/strong> grows and your mood improves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Set attainable goals for yourself &#8211; Set short term goals that you can achieve. As you accomplish these smaller goals, you will feel better about your prospects of achieving more in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Practice like it matters \u2013 More meaningful repetitions in practice will improve your physical skills and increase your belief that you can replicate these skills in competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Stop measuring your <strong>success<\/strong> based on the <strong>success<\/strong> of others \u2013 Comparing yourself to others is a sure-fire way to lower <strong>confidence<\/strong>.
