Not just physical energy&#8230; You also need the <strong>mental stamina<\/strong> to finish games strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"There_are_many_potential_factors_that_zap_your_mental_energy\"><\/span>There are many potential factors that zap your mental energy:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mistakes and frustration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of losing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Physical tiredness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bad officiating<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tough competition<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hoopla around the game<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When a team loses <strong>momentum,<\/strong> they lose <strong>mental energy<\/strong> causing them to <strong>focus<\/strong> on mistakes, turnovers, and losing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Super Bowl LI was a tale of <strong>mental energy<\/strong> and <strong>momentum.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One team, the New England Patriots lose all <strong>momentum<\/strong> in the first half of the game. However, they were able to change momentum in the second half with a few key plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Atlanta Falcons, lost their early <strong>momentum<\/strong> and had nothing in the tank at the end of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Atlanta Falcons squandered a 25-point lead after holding the Pats to only three points in the first half. The Falcons gave up 31 from the third quarter on and lost the game in overtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both teams made mistakes, saw the opposing team make a run, and competed in a physically grueling contest. The difference lies in each team\u2019s focus and who had the <strong>momentum<\/strong> at the end of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Patriots <strong>focused<\/strong> on making plays to get back in the game and into position to win. This <strong>focus<\/strong> provided <strong>momentum<\/strong> for the Patriots as they determinedly fought against great odds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Falcons, on the other hand, seemed <strong>mentally<\/strong> fatigued and not able to make the plays when they needed to the most. The were trying to hold onto the lead, playing to not lose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Shifting_Momentum\"><\/span>Shifting Momentum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rookie linebacker De&#8217;Vondre Campbell talked about how the Falcons\u2019 defense lost a little bit of their edge in the second half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CAMPBELL:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;As a defense, we kind of lost a little bit of our aggression during the game, that we had early in the game. I just thought we lost it a little bit. I just felt like as a defense we kind of got away from our fundamentals a little bit. We were missing some pretty easy tackles.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Falcons head coach Dan Quinn concurred that his team\u2019s <strong>mental energy<\/strong> dropped causing them the Super Bowl title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;We ran out of gas.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the Patriots\u2019 energy grew as they continued to make plays down the stretch and get <strong>momentum<\/strong> on their side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patriots receiver Chris Hogan talked about the team\u2019s ability to stay <strong>focused,<\/strong> in particular, Tom Brady\u2019s <strong>laser-focus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HOGAN:<\/strong><em> &#8220;[Brady is] <strong>laser-focused,<\/strong> and the entire time, there wasn&#8217;t a time where we looked at Tom like he knew this thing was over. There wasn&#8217;t a doubt in my mind. We have one of the best quarterbacks that ever played the game.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lesson learned is that you can <strong>focus<\/strong> on making a comeback or try to hang on to a lead and not lose. Hanging on to a big lead didn&#8217;t work in this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can stay <strong>focused<\/strong> on making one play at a time and grab <strong>momentum<\/strong> to fuel your performance, you have the ingredients for making a comeback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tips_For_Making_a_Comeback\"><\/span>Tips For Making a Comeback<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, <strong>mental energy<\/strong> all comes down to <strong>focus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&#8217;t think that you have lost the competition until the last play of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, look for and grab changes in <strong>momentum<\/strong> to propel your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you are down in the game, you can still have <strong>confidence<\/strong> in your skills.
