<strong>focus<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Poise<\/strong> under pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater <strong>consistency<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improvement<\/strong> in performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If so many <strong>successful<\/strong> athletes <strong>visualize,<\/strong> what exactly is holding you back from adopting this reliable performance enhancement strategy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wizards Head Coach Scott Brooks is a big believer in the power of <strong>visualization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks was an undersized guard at 5-11, Brooks went undrafted and began his professional season in 1988 with the Albany Patroons of the Continental Basketball Association where he was named to the CBA\u2019s All-Rookie team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following year, Brooks was signed by the Philadelphia Sixers and went on to play 10 years in the NBA, and he currently ranks top-100 in career free throw percentage, making 85 percent (564-of-664) in the pros.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks credits one of his high school coaches for his shooting <strong>success<\/strong> and, in particular, one drill his coach required him to practice daily&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drill was to <strong>visualize<\/strong> his free-throws!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BROOKS: <em>&#8220;Visualizing<\/em><\/strong><em> is so huge. My high school coach taught me that a long time ago. I used to visualize making free throws every night.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a young high school player, Brooks had a tough time buying into <strong>visualization.<\/strong> So to counter Brooks\u2019 skepticism, his high school coach told him a story that he has relayed to his players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The tale is of a Vietnam prisoner of war who spent years in solitary confinement&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>To pass the time, he <strong>visualized<\/strong> playing round after round of golf each and every day even though he never played golf in his lifetime.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>After being rescued, the former prisoner decided to make his dream a reality and play his first round of golf.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This newbie golfer performed just like he <strong>mentally rehearsed<\/strong> for years and shot 2 over.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Brooks took over as the head coach for the Washington Wizards, he used <strong>visualization<\/strong> within the team\u2019s daily routine just like he used to improve his skills on the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brooks knows how critical <strong>mental imagery<\/strong> is to athletic <strong>success.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visualization_primes_you_mind_and_body_for_success_by_imprinting_successful_outcomes_in_your_mind\"><\/span>Visualization primes you mind and body for success by imprinting successful outcomes in your mind.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The more you can imagine <strong>successful<\/strong> repetitions, both <strong>mentally<\/strong> and physically, the greater likelihood you will replicate those performances in games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wizards free agent center Ian Mahinmi puts it this way,<em> &#8220;It <strong>[positive<\/strong> <strong>imaging]<\/strong> is like building muscle memory, but for your brain.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s really motor memory. but coaches refer to is as muscle memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine how much better you could perform with greater <strong>confidence<\/strong> gained through <strong>visualization&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now <strong>visualization<\/strong> or <strong>mental rehearsal<\/strong> is more entailed than that, but through a series of steps, you can take advantage of the benefits of <strong>visualization.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visualization_Tips\"><\/span>Visualization Tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong>Relax<\/strong> and get comfortable. This will help quiet your mind.<br>2. See and feel yourself performing how you want to in competition.<br>3. Use all your senses in order to have a deeper imaged experience.<br>4. <strong>Rehearse<\/strong> only <strong>positive<\/strong> results in the beginning.<br>5.
