expectations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor playing conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to perform to your <strong>peak,<\/strong> you find a way to be able to <strong>cope<\/strong> well with <strong>distractions<\/strong> by being ready for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_toughest_distractions_to_cope_with_are_the_ones_you_create_for_yourself\"><\/span>The toughest distractions to cope with are the ones you create for yourself.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Internal distractions<\/strong> are when you have negative thinking, doubts, <strong>focus<\/strong> on mistakes, etc. They start within your own mind, not from your surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They sometimes are about doubt, such as, <em>\u201cI won\u2019t do well because\u2026\u201d<\/em> and then you might even make up false evidence in an attempt to give credence to your claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>self-doubt<\/strong> is way more damaging than a distraction because you drain your own <strong>confidence<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Negative beliefs or doubts about future performances are self-fulfilling prophecies and the only way to overcome these is by creating a different story about your ability to perform <strong>successfully.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian rules football midfielder, Hamish Hartlett, hit the nail on the head when he summed up the relationship between negative thoughts and performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HARTLETT:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;I\u2019m trying to breathe more <strong>positivity<\/strong> around the [team]. I\u2019m my own harshest critic \u2014 and have been for a long, long time. It comes the stage where you continue going down the same path, doing the same things and continue to get the same results which is inconsistent performances, not playing to the level you expect of yourself or others expect. Or you change, slightly and hope things change for the better. It seems to be working, so far.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to &#8220;change things for the better&#8221; is to attack your doubts on two fronts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, change the story you tell yourself. When you have a doubt, <strong>recognize<\/strong> it as such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Awareness of your own faulty thinking is always the first step.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, challenge your doubts when they pop into your head and fact check those thoughts to determine if they are valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you change your story, you save your <strong>confidence<\/strong> from taking a big hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Challenge_Your_Self-Doubt\"><\/span>How to Challenge Your Self-Doubt<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Write down the top five doubts you&#8217;ve had before and during competition. Keep a log of these if you need to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Challenge the validity of each doubt and fact check yourself: rationalize with your own doubt.
