However, <strong>confidence<\/strong> can be very fragile for some athletes&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too often, after athletes miss a shot, drop a ball, mess up a tumbling pass or make some other mistake, they judge their performance and dwell on the mistake over and over in their mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judging your performance and holding onto <strong>mistakes<\/strong> can hurt <strong>confidence,<\/strong> sometimes to the point where you play ti safe and avoid making another shot or attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to be a <strong>consistent<\/strong> performer, you need to solve the <strong>confidence<\/strong> riddle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_can_I_stay_confident_after_misses_or_mistakes\"><\/span>How can I stay confident after misses or mistakes?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Notre Dame sophomore, Arike Ogunbowale, is a very <strong>confident<\/strong> basketball player and her <strong>confidence<\/strong> seems unshakeable no matter what happens in the course of a game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a sweet 16 matchup against Ohio State in the 2017 NCAA Women\u2019s Tournament, Ogunbowale missed her first four shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfazed, Ogunbowale kept shooting and made 11 out of her next 18 shots and totaled 32 points for the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a post-game interview, Ogunbowale revealed her secret to maintaining high <strong>confidence,<\/strong> even if she is slightly off her game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ogunbowale:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;I don&#8217;t really care about shots I miss. I just know I got to keep shooting it. They&#8217;re going to fall eventually. And that&#8217;s what I kept doing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_Ogunbowales_mental_keys_to_staying_confident\"><\/span>What are Ogunbowale\u2019s mental keys to staying confident?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>\u201cI don\u2019t really care about shots I miss.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 A missed shot is in the past and there is nothing you can do to undo the past. <strong>Focusing<\/strong> on the past is a huge waste of time and energy. When dwell on mistakes, it etches that failure deeper in your mind. For these reasons, it is important to let go of misses and move forward to your next opportunity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cI just know I got to keep shooting.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 When you <strong>focus<\/strong> on the present or next opportunity, you can forget the past. Keep going for it. As Wayne Gretzky once said, <em>\u201cYou miss 100% of the shots you don\u2019t take.\u201d<\/em> Success requires action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>\u201cThey\u2019re going to fall eventually.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 You must <strong>trust<\/strong> in your ability and in your training. You have prepared yourself through practice, repetition and training. You are just as prepared to <strong>succeed<\/strong> even if you missed a few attempts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"These_keys_to_confidence_can_be_applied_by_any_athlete_in_any_sport\"><\/span>These keys to confidence can be applied by any athlete in any sport.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a <strong>confident<\/strong> gymnast who steps out of bounds on the floor routine, must quickly focus on the next tumbling pass&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>confident<\/strong> tennis player, who double faulted twice in a row, continues going for her first serve because she knows she will hit her soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>confident<\/strong> baseball player will continue to swing the bat aggressively, despite two early game strikeouts, because he knows things can change with one swing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Confidence<\/strong> is a game-changer so make sure you bring it every competition!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Shooters_Mindset_After_Missing\"><\/span>The Shooter&#8217;s Mindset After Missing:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make your own version of Ogunbowale\u2019s self-talk that you can quickly recite to yourself in competition&#8230; For example, <em>\u201cIt\u2019s only a miss, keep shooting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remind yourself that the more you miss, the greater the chance of making the next one!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid analyzing or judging the miss as this leads to a lack of <strong>trust<\/strong> in your shot or overthinking.
