How can it help you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental toughness<\/strong> is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the ability to cope with adversity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>keep your confidence high<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be focused<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>stay composed in competition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental toughness<\/strong> gives athletes the ability to perform to their highest potential under the most stressful conditions or important competitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately many athletes have experiences similar to this athlete&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;I have been competing in multiple sports since I was young. I am pretty athletic and have great practices but I get so nervous before games&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Especially when a lot is riding on the game, like the playoffs. I wish I had more <strong>mental toughness,<\/strong> but I have no idea how to obtain this.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental toughness<\/strong> helps you perform more <strong>consistently<\/strong> by improving <strong>focus, confidence<\/strong> and <strong>emotional control<\/strong> when under pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental toughness<\/strong> fuels your ability to <strong>overcome obstacles<\/strong> such as mistakes, bad games, injuries and other setbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental toughness<\/strong> gives you the <strong>motivation<\/strong> to learn the physical and <strong>mental<\/strong> skills necessary to compete your best against the toughest competition and to, ultimately, achieve your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oklahoma University senior captain Colin Van Wicklen talked about the necessity for the Sooner gymnasts to develop <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> in order to win a third straight National Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WICKLEN:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;A lot of it comes from <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> and the culture we\u2019ve created. You have to have the ability to step up when the game is on the line and the lights are brightest and we have a lot of guys who really thrive under <strong>pressure.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think you agree that <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> is critical for all athletes&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The next question is:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_can_you_develop_or_improve_your_mental_toughness\"><\/span>How can you develop or improve your mental toughness?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to understand the ingredients to improve <strong>mental toughness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sooners gymnastics team had an interesting technique for increasing their toughness&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WICKLEN:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;We\u2019ve done horse routines where we have people screaming at you and then next guy goes and it\u2019s completely silent. We\u2019ll switch directions on high bar, we\u2019ll do vaults with the music off. We\u2019re always doing things to make us uncomfortable in the gym so that when you are uncomfortable in the meet you will be ready.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Other_strategies_to_develop_mental_toughness\"><\/span>Other strategies to develop mental toughness:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Focus<\/strong> on achieving your goals and, when things do go your way, learn and move forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stay <strong>optimistic<\/strong> especially during rough patches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overcome fear of failure by getting in the habit of taking risks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify situations where you normally backed down or were not mentally tough and find different ways to respond.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During difficult skills, training sets or practices have a <strong>&#8220;go-for-it&#8221; mentality<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In competition, use <strong>mentally tough self-talk<\/strong> such as, <em>&#8220;I will be at my best,&#8221; &#8220;Nothing can stop me,&#8221;<\/em> and,<em> &#8220;I will push through.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental toughness<\/strong> does not happen by chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You have to commit to mental toughness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It cannot be a once-in-a-while thing. You should commit to improving your <strong>mental game<\/strong> every day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Try_this_mental_toughness_tip_to_keep_you_on_track\"><\/span>Try this mental toughness tip to keep you on track:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Set one <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> goal for each practice.
