Or a tennis player on the court without tennis shoes&#8230; Or a baseball player starting their game without a glove&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting a competition with damaged equipment or no equipment at all sounds ridiculous. In fact, you would never knowingly leave your house without having the proper equipment to play at your peak&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably go to great lengths to ensure your equipment is in tip-top shape. You may even spend more money to buy better equipment to give you an edge against the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interestingly_enough_the_most_important_tool_you_can_take_to_a_competition_is_confidence\"><\/span>Interestingly enough, the most important tool you can take to a competition is confidence.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Playing without <strong>confidence<\/strong> is no different than leaving your putter, shoes or glove at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Confidence<\/strong> is a necessary tool if you are to play at your <strong>peak.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_much_time_do_you_spend_cultivating_the_mental_skill_of_confidence\"><\/span>How much time do you spend cultivating the mental skill of confidence?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you get your <strong>confidence<\/strong> in tip-top shape, you will have a huge edge over your competitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be thinking, <em>&#8220;I am not sure how to build <strong>confidence&#8230;&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, you didn\u2019t know how to properly swing a golf club at first until you sought out the expert advice from another golfer or coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably didn\u2019t know the best fit for tennis shoes until you asked someone for help. You might even have done research online to find a baseball glove to best meet your needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to compete with more <strong>confidence,<\/strong> then you need to be proactive and find resources to help with <strong>confidence building.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can research effective <strong>confidence-building<\/strong> strategies, ask other athletes how they tend to their confidence or work with a <strong>mental game coach.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless, if you want more <strong>confidence,<\/strong> you need to <strong>WORK<\/strong> to improve your <strong>confidence<\/strong> level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chicago White Sox starting pitcher, Lucas Giolito, was having difficulty at the major league level until he decided to do something to improve his play&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giolito had <strong>confidence<\/strong> issues and difficulty <strong>trusting<\/strong> his arsenal of pitches. Instead of taking the mound <strong>focused<\/strong> on his just pitching, Giolito took the mound overwhelmed with doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GIOLITO:<\/strong><em> &#8220;Last year, the confidence wasn&#8217;t there. I was doing way too much thinking about all sorts of different things. Am I going to figure it out? Am I going to improve? What&#8217;s going to happen to me here?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Giolito worked on his <strong>confidence<\/strong> game and pointed to <strong>confidence<\/strong> as the difference-maker in his development as a professional pitcher this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GIOLITO:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;Eventually, I learned to let go of that stuff [doubt]. Our pitching coach, Steve McCatty, kept telling me I had really good stuff and that I had to trust it. He said, \u2018When it&#8217;s time to go and compete, it&#8217;s time to go and compete.'&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Confidence<\/strong> doesn\u2019t grow by chance. So how will you go about building your <strong>confidence?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_build_confidence\"><\/span>How to build confidence:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Two components of <strong>confidence<\/strong> are <strong>preparation<\/strong> and being <strong>proactive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write down practice goals for each practice, training session or practice with a private or <strong>mental coach.<\/strong> Practice goals will increase your level of <strong>preparation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, prior to a competition, remind yourself of what you have done to prepare for the competition.
