tough<\/strong> and how it can help an athlete win the big game&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> can help an athlete <strong>overcome<\/strong> <strong>adversity<\/strong>&#8230; How <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> can get an athlete to the next level in their career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an athlete, you have probably heard countless stories of <strong>mentally tough<\/strong> athletes and how that toughness led to <strong>success.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately hearing is not doing&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_any_of_those_stories_spurred_you_to_do_something_to_increase_your_level_of_mental_toughness\"><\/span>Have any of those stories spurred you to do something to increase your level of mental toughness?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your answer is, <em>&#8220;No,&#8221;<\/em> then why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> will help you be a better athlete, enjoy competing more and facilitate <strong>success,<\/strong> why are you not actively working on being <strong>mentally tough<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may think you don\u2019t have what it takes to be <strong>mentally tough<\/strong>&#8230; Or that only elite athletes are <strong>mentally tough<\/strong>&#8230; Or maybe you think the <strong>adversity<\/strong> you face is insurmountable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All three of these statements are falsehoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental toughness<\/strong> is not merely a trait you are born with&#8230; It is a skill that you work towards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"With_more_mental_toughness_the_adversity_you_face_shrinks_in_intensity\"><\/span>With more mental toughness, the adversity you face shrinks in intensity.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Olli Maatta is a defenseman who plays for the <span class=\"st\">Pittsburgh Penguins<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maatta, who was drafted 22nd overall in 2012, has faced much <strong>adversity<\/strong> including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cancer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>two shoulder surgeries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a broken hand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a concussion and a neck\/shoulder injury<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Maatta has been on a journey to reviving his career and regaining the elite form from his rookie season. Maatta has rehabbed and conditioned his body but feels the biggest step to his improved confidence and play on the ice has been his dedication to his mental game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MAATTA:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;Most of the game is in your head. When you\u2019re confident and actually enjoying it, you\u2019re playing better than when you\u2019re overthinking things. You\u2019re not hesitating. There\u2019s only so much you can get better at in two and a half months physically. How much you can change in one day mentally is crazy, I think.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tough_times_can_create_tough_players\"><\/span>Tough times can create tough players.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> Maatta has gained from facing his <strong>adversity<\/strong> has greatly contributed to his great start to the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 16 games, Maatta has two goals and seven assists including a six-game point streak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MAATTA:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;[Being injured] Those were tough times mentally when you\u2019re out, you\u2019re watching games, especially the ones when you\u2019re not working out or skating; you\u2019re doing nothing.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, in reality, Maatta was doing something. Maatta was building his <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> and preparing for a strong comeback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do the same&#8230; You can build your <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> and raise your game too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Mental_Toughness_Tip\"><\/span>A Mental Toughness Tip:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Write down times when you faced <strong>adversity<\/strong> (being behind in a competition, hard training sessions, injury, being benched).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, how did you respond? What did you think? What did you do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If faced with the same situation in the future, how could you respond in a more positive, composed, or mentally tough way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to improve <strong>mental toughness<\/strong> is to anticipate situations that might challenge you <strong>mentally.<\/strong> But you also want to think about how you can respond with <strong>confidence, focus,<\/strong> and <strong>composure<\/strong> to each situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That way you will be mentally prepared to cope with each of these situations.
