athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consistent<\/strong> performers such as, Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryan and Michelle Kwan, have enjoyed long, <strong>productive<\/strong> years in their sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These athletes not only reached the pinnacle in their sport, but <strong>consistently<\/strong> competed at that level for the majority of their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading this, you may be thinking, <em>&#8220;I\u2019m no Michelle Kwan&#8230; she is one of the most accomplished athletes in figure skating.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not about being Michelle Kwan&#8230; This is about you skating and competing your best on a more <strong>consistent<\/strong> basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elite skaters weren\u2019t always <strong>consistent.<\/strong> If you were to interview Olympic skaters, you would hear stories of falls, bad programs and up-and-down performances during their early years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Top-tier_skaters_reached_that_%E2%80%9Celite_status%E2%80%9D_because_they_actively_worked_on_being_more_consistent\"><\/span>Top-tier skaters reached that \u201celite status\u201d because they actively worked on being more consistent.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now let\u2019s diffuse a <strong>mental<\/strong> landmine that ruins many skating careers&#8230; Many skaters equate <strong>consistency<\/strong> with <strong>perfection.<\/strong> These terms are <strong>not<\/strong> even closely related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Perfectionism<\/strong> is the pursuit of an unattainable outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Perfectionism actually leads to inconsistency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>perfectionist<\/strong> skater will be so hard on themselves after a bad program that lead to more disappointed skating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consistency<\/strong> is not solely about results. <strong>Consistency<\/strong> is more about maintaining a certain attitude, routine and training habits which lead to competing within a certain performance range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consistency<\/strong> is not some accolade received at the end of a skater\u2019s career but a mindset that a skater carries throughout their career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_do_elite_athletes_become_consistent\"><\/span>How do elite athletes become consistent?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Consistency<\/strong> develops by maintaining the same positive attitude over time, preparing at a high level repeatedly and training the same manner you want to compete day in and day out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canadian figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond came to the realization that she needed to <strong>focus<\/strong> on <strong>consistency<\/strong> instead of perfection if she was to advance her skating career to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osmond first qualified for the World Championships in 2013 where she finished in eighth place. Osmond knew she would need a shift in mindset if she were to medal at Worlds and eventually compete for a medal at the 2018 Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osmond decided to work with a <strong>sport psychologist<\/strong> to improve her <strong>consistency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>focus<\/strong> on her <strong>mental game<\/strong> helped Osmond achieve a silver medal win at the World Championships earlier this year and a dominant gold medal performance at Skate Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OSMOND<\/strong>: <em>&#8220;I found that [working with a sport psychologist] was a big part of my improvement last year, so that is something I won\u2019t be giving up any time soon.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osmond talked about how working with a <strong>sport psychologist<\/strong> has improved her <strong>focus,<\/strong> training and <strong>consistency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OSMOND:<\/strong><em> &#8220;If something is in my head and I can\u2019t let it go, I can talk to her about it. Even speaking will get it out of my head and make training a lot easier the next day. But there\u2019s also a lot of meditation, focusing work that has helped me a lot, not just at competitions but in everyday practice to make the practice feel like competition.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like Osmond, you can improve your <strong>consistency<\/strong> and gain a competitive edge over the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Improving_Your_Consistency\"><\/span>Improving Your Consistency:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Get a good picture of what <strong>consistency<\/strong> would look like for you&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would <strong>consistency<\/strong> mean performing with more <strong>confidence,<\/strong> challenging yourself with new jumps, strengthening current skills, etc.?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, write down a plan for how you can approach training with the same consistent attitude, intensity and <strong>focus.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, <strong>consistent<\/strong> performances start with <strong>consistency<\/strong> in your <strong>mental preparation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr
