<strong>Focusing<\/strong> <strong>on the process<\/strong> or focusing in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Without_being_fully_immersed_in_your_race_you_cannot_race_to_the_best_of_your_abilities\"><\/span>Without being fully immersed in your race, you cannot race to the best of your abilities.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of thought distractions include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>&#8220;My stroke feels off.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;Cycling is where I lose ground.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;I have so much time to make up in the run.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;What if I disappoint my coach?&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;My coach will be upset with my poor showing.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;I\u2019m so sore.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;The water is cold.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;The sun is too bright.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>&#8220;I have to race against my biggest rival.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirsten Sass overcame many potential <strong>distractions<\/strong> and scored a major victory at the 2017 USA Triathlon Age Group Sprint National Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conditions were not optimal for the field as the race started in a light rain shower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weather, many times, is a big <strong>distraction<\/strong> even hours before a triathlon starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SASS:<\/strong><em> &#8220;I wasn\u2019t really sure how close I was to the overall, but my dad was out there saying, \u2018Every second counts!\u2019 I wasn\u2019t expecting the rain, so that\u2019s where the mental aspect comes in, just finding your own zone, enjoying the day and seeing all the amazing athletes that are out there.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sass was able to stay <strong>focused<\/strong> on \u201c&#8221;finding her zone&#8221; or &#8220;racing her race.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sass was immersed in the moment and <strong>focused<\/strong> on the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sass did not <strong>focus<\/strong> on the rain; she knew all the triathletes faced the same conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sass was not <strong>focused<\/strong> on how close she was to a podium finish; she <strong>focused<\/strong> on racing each individual leg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sass prevailed over all the potential distractions, <strong>focused<\/strong> on the process, edged out the field by 34 seconds, finished in 1 hour, 6 minutes, 50 seconds winning the sprint-distance and taking the women\u2019s overall title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"There_are_some_keys_when_it_comes_to_focus\"><\/span>There are some keys when it comes to focus:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You should know what distracts you. What things tend to knock you off your <strong>focus<\/strong> and hurt your performance?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you know your common <strong>distraction,<\/strong> you need recognize when your <strong>focus<\/strong> is drifting or the warning signs that immediately precede losing <strong>focus.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lastly, you want to learn a strategy to <strong>regroup<\/strong> and <strong>refocus<\/strong> on the cues that immerse you in the process of racing. These cues could include your tempo in the swim, getting into a rhythm, staying <strong>relaxed<\/strong> and fluid.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>It is critical to learn the why\u2019s and how\u2019s to improve the mental skill of focusing to take your triathlon performance to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Improve_Your_Competitive_Focus\"><\/span>Improve Your Competitive Focus:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a re-focusing plan to help you get back on track mentally&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What will you do when you are faced with situations that normally distract you?
