game.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;My coaches <strong>EXPECT<\/strong> me to play my game.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are all thoughts a volleyball player might have when approaching a match&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a former collegiate volleyball player, there were certain things I <strong>expected<\/strong> of myself in every game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I <strong>expected<\/strong> to get my feet to each ball in serve receive. I thought I <strong>should<\/strong> find a way to score with every set I got. I <strong>expected<\/strong> to get at least the first three serves in each time I went behind the service line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"However_just_like_you_Im_human_and_thats_not_reality\"><\/span>However, just like you, I\u2019m human and that\u2019s not reality.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A ball is shanked or a serve is missed every now and then on the professional level. Even the best outsides don\u2019t score on every set they attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had these <strong>&#8220;SHOULD\u2019S&#8221;<\/strong> about my performance&#8230; or rather <strong>high expectations,<\/strong> that would leave me <strong>frustrated<\/strong> with <strong>low confidence<\/strong> after a match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I struggled to accomplish the fairly strict, <strong>unrealistic expectations<\/strong> I had for myself, and that would result in a lack of belief in my ability, or <strong>fragile confidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While these thoughts or expectations before a match can appear advantageous, like you\u2019re working towards something, having expectations can actually often be detrimental to a volleyball player\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about it&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you expect to pass a &#8220;3&#8221; ball every time in serve receive (which is difficult), and you don\u2019t, what happens? You begin to question your ability and <strong>lose confidence<\/strong> in your performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Instead_of_having_expectations_going_into_a_match_set_process_goals\"><\/span>Instead of having expectations going into a match, set process goals.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people wonder the difference in <strong>expectations<\/strong> and goals because they seem so similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expectations<\/strong> are rigid rules you place on your performance, in which you wind up judging yourself subsequently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Goals_are_something_you_continuously_work_towards_that_help_you_achieve_something_desired\"><\/span>Goals are something you continuously work towards that help you achieve something desired.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have an expectation such as, <em>&#8220;I <strong>EXPECT<\/strong> to pass a &#8216;3&#8217;
