she has a strong front and back-row game.<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peaksports.com\/sports-psychology-blog\/how-to-maintain-focus-through-a-volleyball-match\/#Related_Sports_Psychology_Articles\" >Related Sports Psychology Articles<\/a><\/li><li class='ez-toc-page-1 ez-toc-heading-level-3'><a class=\"ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peaksports.com\/sports-psychology-blog\/how-to-maintain-focus-through-a-volleyball-match\/#The_Focused_Athlete\" >The Focused Athlete<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Do you or your athletes struggle to maintain <strong>focus,<\/strong> or <strong>concentration<\/strong> through an entire match?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Do_you_get_thrown_off_or_distracted_with_momentum_shifts\"><\/span>Do you get thrown off or distracted with momentum shifts?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it difficult for you to <strong>let go of mistakes<\/strong> or past points and play one touch at a time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These can all be considered distractions for a volleyball player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Some other distractions that might affect a player\u2019s ability to focus in the moment are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The refs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teammates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Opponents on the other side of the net<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stands (parents, friends, fans)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frustration after a mistake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frustration after a bad call<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The opponents closing the gap<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Various whistles at a tournament<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>College coaches around the court<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their own negative thinking\/comments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can easily lose <strong>focus<\/strong> during a match, especially at a tournament, and not be able to push through and play to the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I coached a volleyball player a few years back who was great. She\u2019ll be attending a D1 after high school to play both indoor and beach volleyball. So, she\u2019s pretty good!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were playing a cross town rival during school ball and their head coach was the owner of the club where she played and also where my partner and I coached. Sort of like a &#8220;family reunion&#8221; each time we faced off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also her first conference game as a high school player. She wanted to have a perfect game, especially in front of the head guy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_player_is_an_outside_she_has_a_strong_front_and_back-row_game\"><\/span>This player is an outside; she has a strong front and back-row game.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout this particular match, she was excellent from the back row. She was doing well on the front but wasn\u2019t having the game she wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opposing team was a school that our team hadn\u2019t beat since I played there in high school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The match was 2-2 and we were heading into the fifth set&#8230; the tie breaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This player approached me at the score table while I was putting in the line-up, hysterical. She told me not to start her, to put in our 3rd outside.
