Ready?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there a routine you follow before each match that helps you transfer into game-time mode?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent reader asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CHow_do_I_prepare_mentally%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><em>&#8220;How do I prepare mentally?&#8221;<\/em><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mental preparation,<\/strong> like physical preparation is crucial to a volleyball player\u2019s game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to <strong>prepare mentally<\/strong> before a match is to develop a <strong>routine<\/strong> that helps you move from your life to the role of &#8220;athlete.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In college, I did the same three things before each game. I got dressed the same way, putting all my gear on my right leg and then my left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That could possibly be classified as superstition now, though, I viewed it as part of my routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I then listened to the exact same song and said a prayer during the National Anthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preparation<\/strong> and <strong>routine<\/strong> were so important to me as an athlete, that during my eight years as a volleyball coach after college I continued to say a prayer during the National Anthem before every game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I\u2019ve met with volleyball teams in the past as a <strong>mental coach,<\/strong> typical issues have been <strong>consistency, preparation,<\/strong> and getting in the right <strong>&#8220;mindset&#8221;<\/strong> to play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_first_things_I_always_do_in_those_sessions_is_ask_who_has_a_pregame_routine\"><\/span>The first things I always do in those sessions is ask who has a pregame routine.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, only a couple of players have a <strong>routine<\/strong> they do before each game, and it\u2019s normally just a music playlist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stress the importance of having a routine&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It supports a volleyball player\u2019s transition from the life into athlete mode. It also helps an athlete get hype, ready, and <strong>focused<\/strong> on what\u2019s in front of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"An_important_element_of_a_pregame_routine_is_that_you_want_it_to_resonate_with_you\"><\/span>An important element of a pregame routine is that you want it to resonate with you.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It needs to be significant to you as an athlete and tap into your individual personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, a setter I worked with told me her routine before a game was to set on the wall, a specific physical warm up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, she would wash her hands and listen to a playlist of about five songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I asked her why she washed her hands before and her explanation was that she wanted her hands to be clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She felt that if they were &#8220;dirty,&#8221; she might double.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially, she was wiping her slate clean and starting fresh before each match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to this player, you want a <strong>routine<\/strong> that\u2019s unique to you and helps you <strong>mentally prepare<\/strong> for a game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If it doesn\u2019t mean anything to you, you won\u2019t <strong>consistently<\/strong> do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Success_is_largely_just_a_matter_of_consistency\"><\/span>Success is largely just a matter of consistency.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>pregame routine<\/strong> is the <strong>BEST<\/strong> way to prepare for a match, both physically and mentally&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Cohn and I have a new audio and workbook program coming out just for volleyball players and coaches&#8211;to improve <strong>mental preparation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we need your help to spread the word and get other players and coaches&#8217;
