athlete is to achieve as much of their athletic <strong>potential<\/strong> as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some athletes think the best way to improve is to never be satisfied with a performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These athletes engage in constant <strong>self-criticism<\/strong> to try to up their game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a tricky area for many athletes to navigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Self-criticism_rarely_leads_to_self-improvement\"><\/span>Self-criticism rarely leads to self-improvement.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you want to learn from your failures, but <strong>self-criticism<\/strong> leads to <strong>lower confidence<\/strong> and <strong>less productivity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good case example of the <strong>self-criticism<\/strong> and <strong>self-improvement<\/strong> is Ivana Jeremic, who is in her third year on Arizona State University\u2019s volleyball team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ASU squad is off to one of its best starts and much of the credit goes Jeremic who is one of the statistical leaders on the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, Jeremic\u2019s quest to uncover her potential and drive for <strong>self-improvement<\/strong> can be a bit excessive at times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>JEREMIC:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;I am really <strong>self-critical.<\/strong> I always think I can do better. Even if I had an awesome night, I come out and think &#8216;I can do this better.&#8217; I will never say I am doing good; I will always say I can do better.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That statement makes sense to some degree. Why would any athlete settle for their current level of play?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to be your best, shouldn\u2019t you always try to be better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one problem with the &#8220;good is never good enough&#8221; <strong>mindset.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This belief often underlies <strong>perfectionism<\/strong> where performance is either perfect or failure&#8230; And since <strong>perfection<\/strong> is impossible, the athlete always feels like they failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Perfectionism_undermines_your_confidence_because_you_might_not_accept_credit_for_the_things_you_do_well\"><\/span>Perfectionism undermines your confidence because you might not accept credit for the things you do well.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The bad always outweighs the good parts of performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-criticism<\/strong> becomes a <strong>destructive<\/strong> habit that eventually blocks an athlete from her potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-criticism<\/strong> becomes the most <strong>damaging<\/strong> when it takes place in the middle of competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-criticism<\/strong> in the middle of a competition makes <strong>mistakes<\/strong> live on in an athlete\u2019s mind and takes away their <strong>focus<\/strong> on the next play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/inlpcenter.org\/stop-self-critical-thoughts-nlp-mindset\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>How to Stop Self-Critical Thoughts with this NLP Mindset<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASU volleyball head coach, Sanja Tomasevic, understands how the pursuit of <strong>perfection<\/strong> can be the greatest enemy, not just for Jeremic, but any athlete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TOMASEVIC:<\/strong><em> &#8220;[Jeremic] is her biggest critic and that\u2019s why it took her this long [to play as well as she is playing]. She is a really good player. She gets in her own head and when she starts criticizing herself, (and) she doesn\u2019t know how to get out of it &#8230; You got to move on and stop beating yourself up.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Excessive_self-criticism_will_hold_you_back_from_stepping_your_game_up_to_the_next_level\"><\/span>Excessive self-criticism will hold you back from stepping your game up to the next level.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To grow your <strong>confidence,<\/strong> you want to let go of striving for <strong>perfection<\/strong> and look to be at your best each and every game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This &#8220;be-your-best&#8221; <strong>mindset<\/strong> encompasses both <strong>self-improvement<\/strong> and giving yourself credit for your <strong>successes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With your <strong>confidence<\/strong> intact, you will be in the best position to improve and take your game to the next level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Improvement_Without_Excessive_Self-Criticism\"><\/span>Improvement Without Excessive Self-Criticism:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong>There is a time and place for everything.<\/strong> During a competition, you should focus on your game strategy to stay in the present moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Move forward after a mistake. Avoid judging your game moment to moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>Use objective feedback rather than negative criticism.<\/strong> Being objective requires that you look at your measurable stats, and deciding what to emphasize during the next practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be more objective and focus on improvement, not failures.
