You feel trapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a slump takes over your mind, its mystique grows. The slump gains importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, the slump can become overwhelming, deplete your <strong>motivation<\/strong> and lessen the very effort needed to break out of that slump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Slumps_happen_in_all_sports%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>Slumps happen in all sports&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find yourself in a slump, the right <strong>mindset<\/strong> can get you back on track quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Your_mindset_affects_both_your_focus_and_your_response_to_events\"><\/span>Your mindset affects both your focus and your response to events.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are in a slump, it is tempting to <strong>focus<\/strong> on results. <strong>Focusing<\/strong> on the results compounds the problem and keeps you stuck in slump mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breaking out of a slump requires that you do something different&#8230; attack the issue from a different angle&#8230; approach competitions from a different mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a 3-game mini-slump, BYU Men\u2019s Basketball team broke out with back-to-back wins by staying focused on their <strong>preparation<\/strong> and their game rather than the slump itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BYU forward Yoeli Childs talked about the <strong>mindset<\/strong> needed to turn things around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>CHILDS<\/strong>: <em>&#8220;We\u2019ve got to play harder&#8230; We need to figure out what we can do individually, each guy, to make our team a little bit better. I don\u2019t think we\u2019re too far off. Every guy, especially myself, needs to find a way to give more. We\u2019re not broken but we obviously have a problem right now. You can\u2019t lose three in a row. But we\u2019re not broken. We\u2019re going to figure it out. We\u2019re going to grind and get there.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What about BYU\u2019s <strong>mindset<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, the team knew they could right the ship. Too many athletes feel that they are &#8220;broken&#8221; or that there is something wrong with them during a slump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, BYU understood they needed to &#8220;play harder&#8221; and <strong>focus<\/strong> on what each athlete could improve upon to move forward. The team was <strong>focused<\/strong> on improvement, slight adjustments, not the slump itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, BYU was committed to grinding it out and finding a way to break out the slump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find yourself in a slump, then you need examine your <strong>mindset<\/strong> and how you stay stuck and how to get back on track quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Try_these_two_tips_for_a_%E2%80%9CSlump-Busting%E2%80%9D_Mindset\"><\/span>Try these two tips for a &#8220;Slump-Busting&#8221; Mindset<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Avoid <strong>generalizing<\/strong> based on the past few games. It doesn\u2019t matter what happened in the last five competitions or even the last one. <strong>Focus<\/strong> on the next opportunity for <strong>success<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t wait for your performance to magically come around! You have to improve your thinking to improve performance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember that slumps are always temporary.
