Over thinking and dwelling on mistakes cause more mistakes.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to <strong>focus<\/strong> on the net skill in your program&#8211;not the past skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be difficult but you can learn to do this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Focusing<\/strong> is not giving yourself specific instructions while you go through their routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, this thinking should be reserved for practice time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Peak<\/strong> <strong>performance<\/strong> comes about when you are immersed in the moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Skating_freely_is_the_ability_to_do_what_you_have_trained_your_body_and_mind_to_do_without_analyzing_judging_and_thinking_as_you_skate\"><\/span>Skating freely is the ability to do what you have trained your body  and mind to do without analyzing, judging and thinking as you skate.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your mind may drift at some point but the key is to <strong>refocus<\/strong> or <strong>re-engage<\/strong> in the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might use a simple phrase or cue to help you get back into the moment, such as, <em>&#8220;Next skill now.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you are not the only one that needs to compartmentalize mistakes&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>19 year-old American Nathan Chen experienced some tough breaks at the 2018 Grand Prix finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chen was first after the short program, but a mistake on his quad toe loop-triple toe loop combo cost him some points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chen, who was the reigning world champion, understood it was necessary for him to <strong>re-focus<\/strong> on what was in front of him, the free skate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>CHEN<\/strong>: <em>&#8220;The free [skate] is the most important  thing now. What I did in the past just stays in the past. I can&#8217;t change  what I did. So I just have to use what I did and evolve it into the  long program.&#8221;<\/em> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Take Chen\u2019s advice when you are in a similar situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important thing is what you need to do right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can keep the past in the past, you will be able to skate <strong>freely<\/strong> even after making <strong>mistakes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Refocus_Quickly_After_a_Mistake\"><\/span>How to Refocus Quickly After a Mistake:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a key word to <strong>refocus<\/strong> on the next skill after a mistake. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep in mind: J<\/strong>ust the fact that you recognize you make a mistake says you&#8217;re thinking about the last element.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat a simple phrase, such as, <em>&#8220;Let it go,&#8221;<\/em> or, <em>&#8220;Focus on the next,&#8221;
