have some degree of doubt regarding this <strong>mentality.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ultimate truth of the matter is that &#8220;practice makes <strong>preparation.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you practice landing a clean salchow jump 20 times in practice, 5 days a week, that is 100 practice jumps over the course of a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t you think you would be better <strong>prepared<\/strong> to land that jump in competition than if you paid little attention towards developing that skill in your training?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Practice_sets_in_motion_a_series_of_interconnected_effects%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>Practice sets in motion a series of interconnected effects&#8230;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Practice leads to <strong>preparation<\/strong>&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Preparation<\/strong> leads to increased <strong>confidence<\/strong>&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased <strong>confidence<\/strong> leads to less <strong>performance<\/strong> <strong>anxiety<\/strong>&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Less anxiety<\/strong> leads to greater trust in your ability to perform skills in competition&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trust<\/strong> leads to the ability to immerse yourself in the moment&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Performing in the moment<\/strong> leads to a willingness to go for the skills you have practiced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All these characteristics <strong>(preparation, confidence, relaxation, trust<\/strong> in your abilities, <strong>immersion<\/strong> in the moment and <strong>risk taking)<\/strong> are the hallmarks of <strong>peak performance!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does practice ensure that you will never fall?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No\"><\/span>No!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Does practice ensure winning?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No-2\"><\/span>No!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Does practice ensure flawless programs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No-3\"><\/span>No!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What practice does is it improves <strong>consistency<\/strong> and dramatically increases the likelihood of having top-level performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preparation<\/strong> has greatly benefited figure skaters Jocelyn Haines and James Koszuta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haines and Kozuta have big dreams, competing in the Olympics, but Haines and Kozuta are <strong>focused<\/strong> on <strong>preparing<\/strong> their best one competition at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haines, 16, and Koszuta, 20, have quickly ascended in the sport of ice dancing earning first place in the novice level in 2017 and seventh place at the junior level last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championships approached, Haines and Koszuta remained <strong>focused<\/strong> on their <strong>success formula<\/strong> which all starts with <strong>preparation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haines emphasized that <strong>preparation<\/strong> needs to be comprehensive. There are a number of factors that improve your chances for success in the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HAINES:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just strength, either. You have to be artistic and musical. It&#8217;s a lot of little things that add up that make a really good figure skater.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Koszuta recognizes that <strong>preparation<\/strong> doesn\u2019t squelch <strong>nerves<\/strong> or <strong>pressure,<\/strong> but <strong>preparation<\/strong> readies you to perform your best despite the nerves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>KOSZUTA:<\/strong> <em>&#8220;There&#8217;s always a little bit of nerves on the line, but overall we&#8217;re ready.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haines further emphasized the pair\u2019s commitment to <strong>preparation<\/strong> by adding, <em>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been very well-trained.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Again_preparation_does_not_result_in_perfection\"><\/span>Again, preparation does not result in perfection.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nor should you be shooting for &#8220;perfect practice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>goal of preparation<\/strong> is learning, applying feedback to further improve skills and providing enough repetition to feel <strong>confident<\/strong> in your ability to perform when you are on the big stage during competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Elite-Level_Preparation\"><\/span>Elite-Level Preparation:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask yourself before each practice, <em>&#8220;What do I need to do today, to be better prepared for tomorrow?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Those 1-2 things are your practice objectives for that day.
