Depending on the sport, training sessions can be long and grueling. Seasons are lengthy. There are ups and downs all through the year. Injuries and discomfort can pile up during the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of time and energy are expended during the course of the year. Pressures exist in and out of sports\u2026 And potential distractions are all around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With all these aspects at play, it can be easy to make excuses for missing practices and not giving full effort in training sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Common_excuses_include\"><\/span>Common excuses include:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I don\u2019t have the time to train<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I don\u2019t feel 100 percent and I am not up to training today.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I will make it up in tomorrow. One practice won\u2019t make a difference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The weather is too cold, rainy or windy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m too tired and need a day of rest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s only practice. It\u2019s not a competition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I still perform well even though I don\u2019t train as hard as others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I have a lot to do today other than training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I having a nagging injury and should rest it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Excuses pull you away from your potential. Excuses become habits and these habits have a profound impact on performance. Excuses, then, become the reason some athletes fall short of achieving their goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of training is to <strong>challenge<\/strong> yourself to the max so the pressure and discomfort of competition is a known entity. Challenging yourself prepares you to be at your best in competition. Basically, top athletes push in training to the point that competitions seem easier mentally and physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marathon runner Val Curtis understands the challenges inherent in training and the effects those challenges have on performance. Curtis won the 2019 Sanford Fargo Marathon in 2:43.08, thus qualifying for the Olympic Marathon Trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_road_to_success_was_not_easy_for_Curtis_Curtis_faced_many_training_challenges_including\"><\/span>The road to success was not easy for Curtis. Curtis faced many training challenges including:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Family and being a mother<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A lengthy layoff from competing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficult training conditions in North Dakota, such as blistering cold, snow, and, at times, blizzards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Being 32 years old and the physical stress on her body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After Curtis won the marathon, she talked about how the challenges of training prepared her to perform at a high level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CURTIS<\/strong>: <em>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t anything I wasn\u2019t prepared for today. I trained through it all. The mental toughness of having to run miles on a treadmill the whole month of February when it\u2019s negative 60, negative 50 outside; you can\u2019t get work done outside. It\u2019s not a place for a fair weather runner, for sure. It builds so much mental toughness so I was ready for today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only do training <strong>challenges<\/strong> push you to expand your physical capabilities and prepare you to perform at a high level, they develop the mental toughness required to achieve your max potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stay_Motivated_During_Challenging_Training_Sessions\"><\/span>Stay Motivated During Challenging Training Sessions:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a purpose.
