What’s Holding Your Scores Back in Competition?
If you shoot consistently in practice but can’t replicate those scores in competition, your mental game is what needs work. Do any of these sound familiar?
→ “I shoot much better in practice than I do in competitions.”
→ “I overthink my shot process and it breaks down my technique.”
→ “After a bad shot or miss, I lose focus for the rest of the round.”
→ “I tighten up physically under match pressure and it affects my hold and trigger.”
→ “I can’t find the quiet, focused mental state in competitions that I have in practice.”
Real Results from Competitive Shooters
According to a 2024 meta-analysis in Sports Medicine (Röthlin et al.), psychological skills training produced an effect size of 0.83 on athletic performance across 111 studies.
“I Finished Top 5 in the State with Your Help”
“Dr. Cohn was very helpful in helping me get focused for competition. He taught me how to focus on the process, be confident in my abilities, and develop a preshot routine for shooting. I finished top five in the state with his help.”*
~Dave Gatlin, masters-level shooter
“I Am Making Good Progress with Your Tools”
“I broke a 100 Straight at a Satellite Grand in Iowa this week. Mostly All Americans here, a tough tourney to compete in as you can see from the top scores. Miss one and you are pretty much out. I won what is called a carry over to determine who wins when the scores at the top are the same. Four of us in the Veteran category ran 100. They were all two classes above me in skill level. I beat them in the carryover by running a 25 straight. I am making good progress with the tools you enabled me with.”
~Fred W. Smith, Shooter

Step 3: Review and Preparation
Work through the Athlete’s Mental Edge audio and workbook program between sessions to reinforce mental skills and apply them directly to your next competition or match.
Step 4: Application
Apply customized pre-competition mental preparation, guided imagery for shot execution, automated pre-shot routines, and mental reset strategies for recovering after misses and maintaining consistency through long competition stages.
