Is this part of the reason why these athletes are great or is perfectionism a thorn in their side? The best athletes are able to parlay the advantages into shaping their greatness while managing the disadvantages that come with being a perfectionist.
First, athletes need to overcome the lure of “perfectionism” with logic. No athlete is perfect. The pressure to play a perfect game hurts your confidence and enjoyment for the sport.
Second, perform functionally, not perfect. You’re not going to be in the zone every game! Don’t let one bad play dictate your mindset and performance the rest of the competition. Focus on winning ugly and getting it done–without the need to feel or have it look perfect.
