How The Yips And Fear Are Connected

Golf Psychology PodcastStruggling With The Yips In Your Short Game?

Dr. Patrick Cohn, golf psychology expert and author of the “Golfer’s Mental Edge” CD program, teaches amateur to tour professional golfers how to improve their mental game of golf using golf psychology strategies developed over the last 20 years of his career.

In this week’s golf psychology session, mental game of golf expert and author of The Mental Game of Golf, Dr. Cohn, responds to a PGA tour member, one of his tour members is struggling badly with the yips in his short game. He has trouble with pitching or chipping anything 20 yards in.

COHN:”Today, I answer a question from a PGA Tour member, Mike, one of his club members seems to be struggling badly with the yips. Here is what Mike has to say about this particular player at his club, “I have a member of the club really struggling with the yips in his short game. He is a solid 5-8 handicap as long as he doesn’t pitch or chip anything from 20 yards in. I believe its all mental because he has never in the past had these issues. His fear of the chunk, skull, or shank have his buddies not even watching him play when around the green. His mental battles with this shots remind me of the hesitation similar to Charles Barkley.”

“Mike, thanks for the question. Yes, it can be very uncomfortable for some of the playing partners with this particular member when he is shanking it, skulling it, or chunking the shot. It can get pretty embarrassing. That’s part of the issue. I tell my students all the time, it’s not about missing the shot, it’s not about missing a putt, it’s not about blading a ball over the green. Its more about the aftermath, that’s where the real fear comes in.”
