Why Do Athletes Perform Well in Practice but Struggle in Competition?
Most athletes who under perform in competition aren’t lacking skill. Instead, they’re lacking the mental game to transfer practice performance into competition. Do any of these challenges sound familiar?
→ I feel frustrated with my performance no matter how hard I train.
→ My confidence disappears the moment competition starts.
→ I know I can do better, but I don’t perform my best when it matters.
→ I want to compete with the same confidence I have in practice.
→ I play it safe. I’m holding back to avoid making mistakes.

“I Was Able to Perform with Confidence and Shine”
“WOW!!! What a week I had. I was able to perform with a confidence that allowed my style to shine through–no more entering the arena with that “deer in the headlights” look or feeling. I stopped evaluating myself while I was performing, and I actually left the arena after my patterns feeling like I had experienced a lot of fun. Thank you so much.”*
~Julia Dreyer, National Champion Equestrian

How Our Mental Performance Coaching Works: A 4-Step System
Mental performance coaching at Peak Performance Sports follows a structured four-step system built on 40 years of Dr. Patrick Cohn’s work with junior, college, and professional athletes. The system begins with a mental game assessment to identify your specific strengths and weaknesses, then moves through personalized strategy, workbook-based reinforcement, and direct application to competition. Every plan is built around the individual athlete…
Step 1: Assessment and Stats:
You take our exclusive AMAP and AMAT assessments to identify mental game strengths and weaknesses. The mental game assessments provide a structure to work on your mental game in a logic way. Your statistics provides a baseline for us.
Step 2: Strategies and Tools:
You learn the important mental game strategies to help improve your mental performance based on a mental game plan. You learn the tools to apply mental strategies to competition, such as pregame mental preparation and preshot routines.
Step 3: Review and Preparation:
You learn faster with our exclusive Athlete’s Mental Edge Workbook program. We provide this program for you to do audio reviews of the mental coaching sessions and to do advance work for each session.
Step 4: Application
Athletes get proven tools to apply what they learn in the mental coaching session to competition. You learn faster with pregame mental preparation audio programs, guided imagery, and preshot routines.

FAQ About Online or Virtual Sports Psychology Coaching
What is online or virtual sports psychology coaching, and does it really work?
Virtual sports psychology coaching delivers the same structured mental performance training as in-person coaching, but via Zoom, FaceTime, or phone. Sessions follow the same format: a certified coach works with you one-on-one each week, builds your personalized mental game plan, debriefs your recent performances, and assigns mental skills practice to apply before your next competition.
Research and real-world results consistently show that virtual coaching is just as effective as in-person coaching. For athletes who travel frequently, compete in different time zones, or simply don’t have a qualified coach nearby, virtual coaching removes every logistical barrier to getting elite mental performance training.
How does the online sports psychology coaching work?
We follow a structured four-step system built on 40+ years of Dr. Patrick Cohn’s work with junior, college, and professional athletes. First, you complete an athlete mental assessment to pinpoint your specific mental game strengths and weaknesses. From there, your coach builds a personalized mental game plan targeting your biggest challenges.
Each week you meet with your mental coach to learn and apply mental skills, such as visualization, focus strategies, pregame routines, confidence-building techniques, and more. Between sessions, you work through mental training workbooks and audio programs to reinforce what you’re learning and translate it directly into competition.
What types of online sports psychology programs are available?
We offer several options depending on your goals, sport, and schedule. One-on-one virtual coaching is the most intensive and fastest path to lasting mental game improvement — sessions are held weekly with a certified mental performance coach and include a fully personalized plan.
Team programs are available as live virtual seminars for coaches who want to deliver mental training to an entire roster. Reach out and contact us to find out which program is the right fit.
Can youth athletes and high school athletes do virtual sports psychology coaching?
Yes — virtual coaching is particularly well-suited for young athletes and their families. Sessions are flexible enough to work around school, practice, and game schedules, and because there’s no commute involved, it’s far easier to fit into a busy week.
Our certified mental performance coaches have extensive experience working with youth and high school athletes on challenges specific to that stage: dealing with parent pressure, fear of failure, early sport specialization stress, team dynamics, and the transition to higher levels of competition. Parents are often involved in the early sessions to ensure the mental skills being developed are reinforced at home as well.
What mental skills does online sports psychology training focus on?
Online training at Peak Performance Sports covers the full range of mental performance skills athletes need to compete at their best consistently. This includes building self-generated confidence that holds up under pressure, developing sharp focus and the ability to refocus after errors, learning to trust training during competition instead of over-thinking, managing nerves and performance anxiety.
You also learn how to create a pregame mental routine, stay composed through adversity and slumps, and set goals that fuel motivation through a long season. Every plan is tailored to the athlete — the specific sport, the level of competition, and the individual mental game challenges they face.
How do I get started with online sports psychology coaching?
Getting started is simple. Contact us and briefly describe your sport, level, and the mental challenges you’re dealing with. We’ll match you with the right program — whether that’s one-on-one coaching, an online course, or a team seminar. Virtual coaching programs are per month, and self-guided digital training programs are available from $79.
Most athletes are up and running within a week of reaching out. You don’t need to be local, and you don’t need to wait — the only requirement is being ready to invest in your mental game.
