The ability is there. What changes between practice and games is mental. Work one-on-one with Peaksports certified mental performance coaches via Zoom from anywhere. Learn the same mental performance skills we’ve taught to competitive soccer players at every level for 40+ years.

What is Mental Performance Coaching for Soccer?

Soccer mental performance coaching is one-on-one virtual training that helps players overcome the mental barriers, such as fear of failure, loss of confidence after mistakes, frustration during games, and the inability to take practice performance into matches, that prevent them from competing to their potential. Psychological skills training produces measurable performance gains: According to a 2024 meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine (Röthlin et al.).

At Peak Performance Sports, certified mental performance coaches work with soccer players using the Athlete’s Mental Edge Framework and the Athlete’s Mental Aptitude Assessment (AMAP) to build a personalized mental game plan. Programs are available for youth, travel, club, high school, and college soccer players worldwide.

If you play well in practice but can’t replicate it in games, your mental game is what needs work. Do any of these sound familiar?

→ Frustration after mistakes destroys focus on the next play
→ Confidence drops when the coach gives feedback or makes substitutions
→ Indecision and hesitation replace aggressive play in games
→ Practice freedom disappears under game pressure
→ Fear of mistakes leads to tight, cautious play

“I Only Have Positive Things to Say”

“I’ve been working with Peak Performance Sports over a year now, and I only have positive things to say about the coaching. The sessions I have had have been very specific and helpful.”*
~Majed Abdullah,

“He Finally Put It All Together”

“After your session, Mason had a game. He had the best game so far! He hustled, shot, no goals but two assists but he was cool with it because his focus was on shooting and not scoring (finally), defended well with his hands, finally put it all together. It was fun to watch and you could tell he felt really good about it.”*

How Our Soccer Mental Coaching Works

Every virtual coaching program follows a 4-step mental coaching system based on 40+ years of Dr. Cohn’s work with competitive soccer players:

Take the Athlete’s Mental Aptitude Assessment (AMAP) to identify mental game strengths and weaknesses specific to your soccer performance. Your game statistics and performance history provide a baseline for measuring improvement.

Learn mental game strategies tailored to soccer, pregame mental preparation, in-game focus techniques, mistake-recovery routines, and confidence-building strategies to play aggressively and freely in games.

Work through the Athlete’s Mental Edge audio and workbook program between sessions to reinforce mental skills and apply them directly to your next game or tournament.

Apply customized pregame mental preparation, guided imagery for positioning and finishing, in-game focus reset routines, and strategies for staying composed after mistakes, missed shots, and turnovers.

FAQ About Mental Performance Coaching for Soccer

What does a mental performance coach do for soccer players?

A mental performance coach for soccer helps players identify and overcome the mental barriers that prevent them from performing their best in games. This includes building confidence under pressure, recovering quickly after mistakes and missed chances, eliminating hesitation in one-on-one situations, managing coach feedback and substitutions, and learning to play freely instead of tentatively. At Peak Performance Sports, we use the AMAP assessment and the Athlete’s Mental Edge Framework to build a personalized mental game plan for every player.

Can soccer mental coaching be done virtually via Zoom?

Yes, virtual coaching via Zoom is how the majority of our soccer players work with us. Sessions follow the same structured format as in-person coaching: weekly one-on-one meetings with a certified mental performance coach, a personalized mental game plan, and mental skills exercises to apply between sessions. Most players start within a week of reaching out.

How much does soccer mental performance coaching cost?

Self-guided digital training programs start from $79. Virtual coaching programs include weekly one-on-one sessions with a certified mental performance coach, the AMAP assessment, a custom mental game plan, unlimited email support, and the Athlete’s Mental Edge workbook. Contact us for full coaching pricing.

How quickly will I see results from soccer mental coaching?

Most players notice a shift in their mindset and on-field confidence within the first few sessions, particularly in how they handle mistakes, hesitation in one-on-one situations, and frustration on the field. Measurable improvement in game consistency and composure typically develops over 4 to 8 weeks of coaching.

What age should a soccer player start mental performance coaching?

Most soccer players benefit starting around age 12, when travel team and club expectations, tryout pressure, and the gap between practice and game performance become noticeable. We coach youth, high school, college, and adult competitive players. Parents are often involved in the early sessions to reinforce mental skills at home.
